Steve, M.Ed. (00:23)
Hey friends, welcome to the season three finale here. We are at the bottom of season three. It just feels like a couple of days ago that I was doing the very first episode to kick off the show. But so we're super thrilled to be here. I'm your host, your cohost, Steve Martinez. And as always, I'm joined by the lovely
Sophie, M.Ed. (00:46)
Sophie, Sophie Youngs and this is episode 80, right?
Steve, M.Ed. (00:52)
It is. ⁓ It makes my brain feel better that we're ending on an even number. If it was odd number, would feel very, I'm like, we have to do another one just to make it even.
Sophie, M.Ed. (01:05)
just I
love that it ends with a zero that like makes it so beautiful that makes yes this scratches a very nice itch in my brain
Steve, M.Ed. (01:14)
Yeah, yeah, I and so this season was very interesting in the sense like there were a lot of firsts a lot of ⁓ you know, we're doing Some things like ftc comes to mind, right? We're like we had we had never done that before ⁓ and so Sophie I you know, we've talked about this but like it sounds like we're gonna be doing more of things like that, right?
Sophie, M.Ed. (01:29)
Yes.
Yes, it looks like it's going to be a possibility ⁓ of us going to more conferences, of us doing more micro interviews and things like that, and maybe even just taking the pot on the road a little bit more than what we have. We've done that once. ⁓ So season four promises to have more of those opportunities if the stars align.
Steve, M.Ed. (01:52)
Mm.
So question, I'm sorry, Sophie, if I did not prepare you for this question, but we're scheduled to be at ISTE. And so I'm there with the media pass. ISTE was very kind to throw that our way. You are speaking, running a full session. Yeah, so can you tell us a little bit about that? What's the session on?
Sophie, M.Ed. (02:29)
I
of, great question. ⁓ The session ⁓ is, I partnered up with a fellow eduGuardian, Lauren, who is an AAC consultant and expert. ⁓ And so I'm actually coming to ISTE in that role for that session as a parent of two autistic children. And she as an AAC ⁓ expert.
that is alternative communication. like talkers and such. So we decided to collaborate on a session that sort of brings both of our, it's near and dear to both of our hearts. And as everyone, mean, as anyone would, the raising my children has changed and solidified some of the things that I did in the classroom as an educator. And
And it's all centered around sort of like UDL ⁓ accessibility and creating a space where all students can thrive, not just the ones that are you required to give them this accommodation or the ones that know how to work the system type of thing. So the session is called, I'm have to look it up because I don't remember.
Thanks for the heads up, Steve. The session is called Small Shifts, Big Curiosity, From Routine to Wonder-Filled Learning. And it is, ⁓ so you can look that up on the ISD site and like get it, get the thing, like the breakdown.
Steve, M.Ed. (04:07)
You're welcome.
Sophie, M.Ed. (04:25)
But it's basically like, are some small things that you can do in your general ed classroom, general ed teachers, general ed principals? Like what are small shifts that you can do in your school, in your classroom that can make huge differences if you just ask for, like ask questions about the why a student is behaving a certain way, ask questions about the what's missing type of thing.
to guide you into those types of changes in the environment and your culture. ⁓ So like something that comes to mind from my own childhood is I was in kindergarten and wanted to stand to cut.
Steve, M.Ed. (04:59)
Mm-hmm.
Sophie, M.Ed. (05:11)
I know why, it was just easier for me to stand to use the scissors. I was forced to sit. And it just made it harder for me to do that. And so I remember getting in trouble all the time because while we were cutting, because there's lots of cutting in kindergarten, but there's fine motor skills and cutting and pasting and stuff. And I just remember getting in trouble all the time because I wasn't sitting when we were cutting. I wasn't walking around. I wasn't a distraction. I was standing at my desk.
cutting. ⁓ But that could totally just be something that if it was just accepted, like, okay, she's not running around everywhere. She's not like being like dramatic and making faces at people. staying on task and she's staying at her desk. Why can't she just stand?
Yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (06:01)
Yeah. I, so something you mentioned earlier that really resonated with me was like the legality of IEPs and quadrochores. You're like, it's like, we have to, but I think oftentimes that covers up the, ⁓ we should be doing this because it's like the right thing to do.
Sophie, M.Ed. (06:30)
And it sort of brings out that like, it's usually an add-on too. So like you're doing this lesson for everybody in the room, but then this child must have this accommodation, must have this piece. So it seems to be like an add-on that teachers are like preparing one entire, entire lesson, entire ecosystem for the quote unquote masses.
And then they have to come in and retrofit some accommodations for the few students who have the IEP saying that they have to have this. And then there are times where like, they don't have a parent like me who's advocating for these accommodations for their children. ⁓ That because the parents just don't know, because the kid is like me and was functioning well enough through school that ⁓ no one paid much attention to the fact that I was struggling.
Steve, M.Ed. (07:14)
Mm-hmm.
Sophie, M.Ed. (07:27)
⁓ And so it's just one of those things that if it was included into the design, included into the foundation as you're like planning and working through this, it wouldn't be an add on. It wouldn't be just another thing for the teacher to do. So that's sort of the type of things that we're talking about in RSD session of things like.
leading with curiosity, the big curiosity from your routine to this wonder-filled learning, so make it more accessible, more welcoming, more... And the goal is hopefully it's gonna be easier on the teacher if you take this type of mindset to like if you start with some of these accommodations, these little things in mind, it's gonna make it easier for the teacher and all of your students in the long run. Because it's not always about like the kid that
Steve, M.Ed. (08:19)
Yeah.
Sophie, M.Ed. (08:21)
has the IP, what if the kid comes in and had a really bad night's sleep? What if the kid comes in and just didn't get breakfast that morning? What if the kid comes in and has a headache that day? Do they not get accommodations because they don't have the law saying you have to give them accommodations?
Steve, M.Ed. (08:39)
Yeah, and I'm looking forward to seeing the session and kind of like what you what you what people walk away with. So I'm super excited about that. And so just for just for everyone like so we again like Sophie's running a session. I think I'm running a playground session. It's not as good as Sophie's. I think mine is very perhaps gimmicky. But
I was thrilled to be included in a playground session, so I'm looking forward to that. ⁓ And so you all are probably aware that Sophie and I are both EduGuardians, so I'm looking forward to ⁓ being out there with that crew. ⁓ And yes, so by default, ⁓ the show is going to be at ISTE. ⁓ We're going to do very similar things as we did at FETC with a little bit of growing. I think our gear is going to little bit better. ⁓
and capturing some content there and we'll be sure to be posting stuff online. ⁓ Maybe at the top of season four, Sophie, we can do like a recap of ISTE or maybe include that in a kickoff of sort. ⁓ But yeah, no, being out in the street, ⁓ I think that is something that we're gonna be doing more of. ⁓ My college, Teachers College of San Joaquin in California, they...
They do a conference in July that I believe Sophie is going to be at in person. And so the pod's going to have a table. We're tabling there. Sophie and I are also running sessions at that conference. So for anyone that's in California, feel free to check that out. I'll put that in the show notes as well.
Sophie, M.Ed. (10:29)
Yeah, Steve signed us up for those sessions. So I'm really not sure what sessions we're presenting.
Steve, M.Ed. (10:37)
One is on underwater basket weaving. have, no, no, no. think, so Sophie, I think we're doing our Blunder Buster session, which we both love. The Fast and Mysterious session, which I believe is also my playground session at ISTE. Yeah, that one's good. It has a lot of Gemini goodness in it. But yeah, no looking.
Sophie, M.Ed. (10:46)
Glunderbusters.
was a good one.
Okay, your RISD session, yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (11:06)
Looking forward to that. This season has included a wide range of guests. I'm super proud of the lineup that we had this year. ⁓ And so we're looking to expand on that for season four. And kind of just looking through the list here of just folks that we've had. ⁓ We kicked off season three with Katie Novak, which was...
a complete thrill to have that interview ⁓ as part of the show. We also had Lisa Nowakowski, Edu Protocol author. ⁓ John from Snorkel, so one of the founders, I believe, of Snorkel was on. Adam Sparks, we kind of had a little founders lineup. ⁓
Sophie, M.Ed. (11:54)
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, Adam is a short answer founder. Fantastic tool, Snorkel and short answer. Love them.
Steve, M.Ed. (12:02)
Yes.
Short
answer, yeah. Both of those are phenomenal. ⁓ so any, so because like, I know that like you were, you were doing a lot of traveling, I think, I believe like the top end of the season. ⁓ What were, what were your big takeaways, maybe like guest wise, like to your memory, like what were some big, some big moments for you?
Sophie, M.Ed. (12:29)
I love talking about like founding stories. do. enjoy them a lot. Like the inspiration and the problem solving that comes into like building a tool is something that I think is really cool. For example, Derek Oldfield with Sound Pedagogy, ⁓ he's from West Virginia where I am and he and I have been friends for a little bit and then he decided to start building a tool to solve a problem and it
Steve, M.Ed. (12:36)
Mm-hmm.
Sophie, M.Ed. (12:58)
It's just really cool when someone takes that initiative to do that. like, and he's not even a, ⁓ an engineer or programmer, but because of the tools that he has access to, ⁓ he can build this that is going to make coaching, ⁓ and helping, ⁓ the growth mindset and all educators to become better in their ⁓ art of teaching it easier because they're going to get that data. Like, it's just really cool.
And the same thing with like snorkel. Why did they, why did they build it? How did they get start that learning journey? What sort of hurdles are they having are just really cool stories to me. I really enjoy, I really enjoy listening to those types of things, especially. And like short answer was a master's thesis turned ed tech tool. Yeah. So it's just kind of cool. It's just, it's just cool.
Steve, M.Ed. (13:50)
Yeah, it was like a capstone of sort. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Sophie, M.Ed. (13:56)
So I really liked those. had it, we had that. Yeah, we did have like a few of them. ⁓ And then we also had some like speakers and leaders types of things. ⁓ Like Dan Thomas with his jokes and Legos. ⁓ And then we had, we had Anthony Beckett too, the founder of Markify.
But then we had Dave Burgess, who's Teach Like a Pirate, but then he also founded ⁓ his publishing and consulting company. ⁓ And then Star Saxton, some authors, we had authors, because she's had, he has a couple books, didn't you read her books, Stars.
Steve, M.Ed. (14:27)
Mm. Mm-hmm.
stars. Yes,
hacking the assessment. ⁓ And I think she's come out with one or two. like since she's been she's writing a lot.
Sophie, M.Ed. (14:38)
Yes.
with another one, yeah.
And then
we had Brian Kulak who did The Hot Seat and then also his new book. What was that one?
Steve, M.Ed. (14:58)
One of the books is the hot seat, I think. The other... Oh, you did.
Sophie, M.Ed. (15:00)
Yes, yes, and I bought that.
Yes, I did. Hold on. I think I have his other one.
Steve, M.Ed. (15:06)
Hahaha
Sophie, M.Ed. (15:11)
Yes, so the hot seat. ⁓ And that's Brian. then level up leadership was his was the new one that we were supposed to end up talking about, but that we were just obsessed with the hot seat. It's a really cool story and I like it a lot. it's it's and he does he continues doing the hot seat on his Instagram as well. So that's really cool.
Steve, M.Ed. (15:14)
Nice.
Yeah.
It's a crazy cool story. ⁓
Yes.
Yes.
Sophie, M.Ed. (15:40)
Anyway, so those are his two books. We had other authors too, like ⁓ the Magical CTE classroom was Tisha and she has ⁓ just the magical classroom as well. ⁓ So she has
Steve, M.Ed. (15:51)
Tisha Richmond.
She has that.
We have,
well, we had like last week, we had Steam Machine. They were back with update. Well, it's a new book and a new addition to the previous. ⁓ And those two are phenomenal. The Business of You. ⁓
Sophie, M.Ed. (16:02)
Yes, and they have.
their new book.
Yes.
Yes,
they have a book and then I think they are developing an app called Blue.
Steve, M.Ed. (16:21)
Yeah.
Which so, Sophie, I don't know if I mentioned this, they are going to be at Edu Growth in July. So it actually is a few folks that are going to be there in person with us. ⁓ Derek, Derek is too. So that's going to be, that's going to be really cool. But yeah, the business of you, this concept of an app helping you figure out you.
Sophie, M.Ed. (16:29)
Yay!
Because Derek is too. Yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (16:51)
Particularly if you don't know where you is going right professionally
Sophie, M.Ed. (16:56)
Yes. ⁓ and I think their target audience is, ⁓ like juniors in high school to like figure out for like counselors to use their, ⁓ the book and the app to figure out which path when you head up to college is going to be like the best one for you, which is phenomenal because, ⁓ depending on the area that you're in, you are either really exposed to a variety of options or teaching is pretty much what you see because you're in school.
Steve, M.Ed. (17:21)
Yeah.
Well, I mean, I would I would say to like, yeah, that's fine if that's their target audience I would like I would say that like I Think we all need that like I think particularly With the work that I'm doing right now, like I see a lot of people that want to enter the teaching profession this is their like second or third career and It's such a different profession, right? They they enter into like
Sophie, M.Ed. (17:40)
Yes.
Steve, M.Ed. (17:57)
This is not just handing out worksheets. I'm like, no, sir, it is not. And I think it's, you know.
Sophie, M.Ed. (18:00)
So.
Well, and that's why
they want to get the juniors so that they don't become 30 somethings and still don't know what they want to be when they grow up. ⁓ They want to target like that audience. like, yes, for sure, because we didn't have Blue and the business of you to help guide us down that path. We all ⁓ could still be trying to figure out what is going on. mean, the statistics say that like the majority of people that go to college
Steve, M.Ed. (18:20)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Sophie, M.Ed. (18:32)
not only change their major, but if they do graduate with a major, they end up shifting their careers later in life. So if we could figure out more about who we are earlier on, then you'll have less likely to waste money on a degree that you're not gonna use and ⁓ figure out what your passion is earlier so that you start that career earlier and not switch around so much, like me.
Steve, M.Ed. (18:40)
Mm-hmm.
Mm.
⁓ I mean, like, and sometimes it's like where, can I put it this way? It's where gravity takes you as well, right? And I didn't, when I was in the classroom originally, I didn't, I never saw myself leaving. I'm like, this, at most I was like, maybe I'll be a coach one day, maybe. ⁓ I never thought like I would go and work at.
Sophie, M.Ed. (19:03)
If
Yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (19:29)
for a company like Kami, right? Like that's just where I think sometimes life just like moves you other places. But like when you do make those pivots and those shifts, like I think it's good to like reevaluate. I think what the business of you preaches of like how are you gonna sell yourself? How are you gonna take care of yourself? And like, but yeah, no, there was some very good, interesting, powerful messaging.
Throughout this season I do have I don't know if it's appropriate right now. I do have a little bit of content to share Just just highlights I couldn't capture every single reel or every single moment from the show But we will share that in just a bit But yeah, we also had Margie on the show And so that was yeah, our good friend Margie who is
Sophie, M.Ed. (20:24)
We did. Our good friend Margie.
Steve, M.Ed. (20:28)
Yeah, who is like leadership role now at Kami, I believe.
Sophie, M.Ed. (20:32)
Yes, she's a team lead. Moving up in the world.
Steve, M.Ed. (20:34)
Nice.
Yes. ⁓ Yeah. Okay. So, Sophie, can...
Sophie, M.Ed. (20:41)
But we also
had the showdown.
Steve, M.Ed. (20:44)
yeah. ⁓ so you know what? Let's okay. Let's chop some time and talk about like events, right? Because March Madness, was Sophie, I believe this is second year, second annual doing March Madness. The branding, the graphics for all that was just so good. So proud of not anything that I did. So
Sophie, M.Ed. (20:45)
yeah, March Madness.
second ear.
Well, thank you.
Steve, M.Ed. (21:11)
Not proud of myself, I'm proud of Sophie. ⁓ And yeah, it was really good. And Sophie, remember, maybe you tell this story a little bit, but like, I remember when we did it the first time, we were like, at least it's built. And then we got into season two, not, the second, the second go of it, not season two, but the second go of March Madness. And we just had that moment of like, we have to recreate everything.
Sophie, M.Ed. (21:36)
Yeah.
And we did more this year when it comes to the branding and the assets and the social media. So it was a lot more to make and it was, and it wasn't like we were starting from scratch. I had some templates and stuff, but after learning and growing, ⁓ like marketing and graphic design, just looking at what we did before I was like, it was cringe. It was a little cringe and ⁓
Steve, M.Ed. (22:04)
Yeah.
Sophie, M.Ed. (22:05)
The whole show is sort of going through a maturing ⁓ brand change right now. So it just made sense to sort of start that and explore some of those options with March Madness, with that opportunity to create all of these new ⁓ assets. ⁓ So we did sort of have the structure built, like we knew what we wanted to make. then, so then remaking those was sort of quick, but it was the additional things that were like, we need to do this and we need to do that and we need to do this.
And we still now have like ideas that we were gonna do for next March Madness. So.
Steve, M.Ed. (22:39)
Yes, yes. And that seems like that's just something that
we're doing now, right? ⁓ That that edgy protocol team working with John in that way. ⁓ And it's just like the community there is so strong and thriving and and positive.
Sophie, M.Ed. (22:45)
Yeah.
And our presenters
are amazing and wonderful. And we now have like all of their videos like hosted. So you're not just like, even if you missed it, we still have all of that free PD for you all. And John has put it in the edu protocol plus stuff as well. So it's like, you've got those.
Steve, M.Ed. (22:59)
Yeah.
edu protocol plus I believe yes
Sophie, M.Ed. (23:21)
You could still learn from those types of things. that's something that I'm really, we did some blogging this year too, I think starting with the March Madness. So we have some blogs on our site now. ⁓
Steve, M.Ed. (23:28)
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
We yes. So that was a whole lot of fun. And Sophie, I realize we can't we probably don't want to talk too much about this, but we're looking at doing other things like March Madness ⁓ from more of like a professional development lens of like, I think all of our episodes are professional development and on their on their own, but like events like
March Madness, we're like, hey, we're an event. We have presenters kind of thing and so the idea the thing I am comfortable sharing is that ⁓ March Madness is in the spring and So we're looking at doing something in the fall So Sophie, I don't know what in October. I don't know what you're willing to share about that if anything
Sophie, M.Ed. (24:12)
in October.
⁓ let's just share like the title.
Steve, M.Ed. (24:28)
Mm-hmm.
Sophie, M.Ed. (24:29)
haven't made. I'm pretty sure we're gonna call it this. I'm not sure if I've sold Steve on it, but it's going to be the Shadow Quest and Under the Hat October Odyssey.
Steve, M.Ed. (24:44)
Mm.
She's right, she's still selling me. She's still selling it. I think I love, okay, so fun fact about me, my birthday is around Halloween. So anytime I think about Halloween, I just think about the memories of having birthdays and birthday parties. And also a fun fact about me, my brother and I were four years apart, exact same birthday. Only that's my mom's timing, I don't know. And so the... ⁓
Sophie, M.Ed. (24:49)
Yes!
the same day. Yeah, that's wild.
Steve, M.Ed. (25:16)
So just growing up, like Halloween is like something that's like, know, dear to me. And so, yes, so I'm excited to have like more of like a spooky type of thing with speakers, presenters, stuff of that nature. But yeah, keep your eyes open for that. We're super excited to, you know, having those types of offerings up for you all.
Sophie, M.Ed. (25:39)
Yes, and I think it's gonna be like a two weekend type of thing, sort of similar to what March Madness is. And I think March Madness is might end up being turned into like a three weekend thing. ⁓ It just gets rather tight when we're presenting with so many people live. Yeah, but yeah, so we are ⁓ super excited to try and organize a little spooky.
Steve, M.Ed. (25:47)
Yeah.
It's a lot of content. Yeah, it's a lot of content.
Yeah, yeah.
Sophie, M.Ed. (26:09)
Bring in all of our fantastic friends and collaborators that we've used before and maybe even have some new names hanging out with us
Steve, M.Ed. (26:18)
More on like some like the business side of things here. So like just just know that like we we have done two launches of a store and and so know that we have we do have a store currently that Sophie and I are probably mostly Sophie is working on a rebrand of sort right and and so some of this stuff might change.
But I'm gonna be doing a better job of just making the store more visible online I know that folks have been I've been asking me like hey Steve where's the source sort of thing? so we have things like and Maybe I can just share a screen because we are on video here. We go ahead and do this one right here. Yes, so The socks I love the socks the mouse pad this sticker right here
if you are attending Edu Growth.
Sophie, M.Ed. (27:15)
That is actually, that's
a magnet.
Steve, M.Ed. (27:19)
this is the magnet, but it's like the sticker though.
Sophie, M.Ed. (27:21)
But it is like the sticker. that is going to be like our new sort of brand. We've got koozies and coasters and stickers, but the tiara on the hat is the updated brand. so that sticker, the dark circle with the hat on the inside, that sticker is going to be at Edu Growth in July. So if you want to stop by.
Steve, M.Ed. (27:23)
Got it. Ooh, a coaster.
Mm.
Yes.
Sophie, M.Ed. (27:49)
and pick up one of those stickers that we have that.
Steve, M.Ed. (27:50)
Yes,
please do so. yep, love that. Love that. Also, are, we are, we're gonna be over the summer working on season four stuff. ⁓ To be fair, I actually do things around here. While Sophie is working on the graphics and the rebrand of sort, ⁓ I will be, I'm in several conversations of yes for season four.
Sophie, M.Ed. (28:08)
Hahahaha
Steve, M.Ed. (28:19)
And so be on the lookout for that if you know anyone They're like, Steve this person would be a great guest or I think I'd be a great guest And you know, feel free to send me a DM. I'll be we'll be doing posts on that ⁓ the other thing that the pod is doing that we've not really done before and that we're exploring is sponsorships and so Yeah, so just to help us keep the show afloat
Sophie, M.Ed. (28:42)
sponsorship.
Steve, M.Ed. (28:48)
You we're not looking at making money off the show by any stretch of the imagination But there's been a lot of out-of-pocket expenses ⁓ The pod is in LLC now Which if you know anything about LLCs in the state of California That comes with a small little price tag And yes, I'm being sarcastic So so we're just we're just trying to get you know, just making sure that it's staying afloat
⁓ We are in some conversations right now with with with sponsors and helping build content We also just love like if we love a product ⁓ We love just Promote it and help it and you know, there's several of them out there that Sophie and I both love ⁓ and so we be on the lookout for that if you know anyone ⁓ or you know ⁓ startups or or or anything of the sort that
Sophie, M.Ed. (29:24)
We love to just promote them, yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (29:44)
⁓ would be interested in like chatting about creating content blogs together stuff like that. ⁓ we're more than happy to support ⁓ in that way as well
Sophie, M.Ed. (29:52)
excited
about the new content that we're potentially going to make specifically like the commercials that are gonna we're gonna have commercials inside of our shows now so I'm excited to make some of the new content and explore that type of marketing that I've not done before so
Steve, M.Ed. (30:10)
Yeah,
yeah, I mean, that's I think that's like having a podcast is also I feel like a safe space to learn and explore things. felt Sophie like you and I were. We were at the advantage of working at Kami. We learned a lot of different things from like the marketing team, ⁓ social media like Hannah comes to mind.
Sophie, M.Ed. (30:38)
Hannah helped us a lot
in social, yeah.
Steve, M.Ed. (30:40)
With and even just like hearing her talk about it.
