Steve, why don't you start off by telling our audience a little bit about your educational journey?
Steve Sherman (06:28)
My educational journey. Well, you know, I studied computer science and math at university. I always knew that I loved the STEM subjects, but I wasn't sure that I was going to go into
Steve Sherman (06:45)
those fields. I just knew that I needed to do something with them. And in particular, I loved working with kids. did a couple of summer camps in the US. And when we were finished the summer camps, we then went into Los Angeles. And we did these classes with very underprivileged kids, where we made ice cream with liquid nitrogen, we did exothermic and endothermic reactions. And those kids

just the expression on their faces told me that not only was learning happening, but it was memorable. And

I thought, wow, if I could do that, if I could be not just a teacher that can teach, but a teacher that can reach, that would be something impactful. you know, I got back and someone said to me, you won't believe this, but there's this program,
Steve Sherman (07:43)
called Living Maths. They've just started. They're in two schools and they're looking for someone who wants to work with kids and do brain teasers and puzzles. And I said, sign me up. I got in. I started doing it for about three months and I said to them, you know what? You guys are not doing it properly. And they said, well, what do you mean? I said, you can't go to different classrooms and each teacher is taking their own content. You don't know what's being covered. It's difficult to measure if we're making an impact.
Steve Sherman (08:13)
I said, you kind of need like a curriculum for all of them. And they said, well, why don't you join us and you can create the curriculum. I said, fine, no problem. And after another three months, I said, you know, why don't I just buy it from you? And they said, sure. So I bought it from them and officially I started in 1995 on the 1st of February on my own. And we now...
Steve Sherman (08:43)
go into classrooms, we inspire kids, we get them excited about the STEM subjects, mainly mathematics, problem solving, creative thinking, natural thinking. And then of course, we also go into, you know, things like coding robotics, ed tech, space, and we've got many other projects, math Olympiads and that type of thing. We've just hosted an astronaut now in South Africa going around to schools.
Steve Sherman (09:11)
We managed to interact with 8,000 people face to face and we did 4.5 million over TV and radio and then another 1.5 million through social media in the first two or three days and then we just stopped counting from there. So it really is for me a passion to go out and inspire kids and you know it's the easiest job in the world when you love what you do.

I I appreciate and l so as a as a history teacher, right, as someone that grew up not enjoying math and as Sophie has pointed out to me many times, is like, Steve, it's because you didn't have the right math teachers, right?

and I like just hearing you describe how your like just the work that you've done throughout your career, right? Like showing kids where math lives.
Steve Martinez (10:26)
Outside of a textbook.

particularly around like it sounds like you've done a lot of work like, you know, with astronomy and space and like the is I don't care who you are at one point in your life, you've been intrigued by what's up there, right? In some in some sort of way, right? And so just showing how math just lives everywhere, outside of just like, did you get number three right?
Steve Martinez (10:57)
and for me that that that's super powerful in in terms of like just showing the relevance of that content area.
Steve Sherman (11:04)
Well, I mean, you made a very valid point that you didn't like mathematics. So I always tell students, have never met a single student that cannot do mathematics. But I've met many students who tell me that they cannot do mathematics.
Steve Sherman (11:25)
And if you tell me that you cannot do mathematics, you are the hardest person to convince. So I need to change your attitude, your mindset, and open your mind to the fact that you do have ability. And I think one of the most critical skills that I can impart on students is to show them that there is a context for mathematics. You're not just doing math at school because that is a subject and you have to do it.
Steve Sherman (11:54)
It actually fits into the real world around you and you need those skills. Problem solving skills are essential. Whether you're on the playground, whether you're at home, if we had more world leaders that were implementing problem solving skills and it doesn't always involve numbers and pictures and colors, problem solving is an approach to solving a problem. Let me tell you the world would be a better place because right now, of our world leaders could certainly do with some problem solving.

Well, actually, it's there are 192 countries around the world that take part in the kangaroo competition and I being based in South Africa and running the Irish one and there's a bit of a history there because every year I would fly to Ireland for math week and I would go and do shows and visit schools and do presentations and I started running a math Olympiad during math week

and we got up to 80,000 kids taking part. So when I discovered that there was no one running the Irish one, I put my hand up, you know, I tend to do these sorts of things and now I'm running it, but I do it from South Africa.

in New York at the Museum of Mathematics. I run a monthly Kahoot for them as well. I teach in a couple of schools around the world. You know, we've got fixed weekly classes that I do online. And, you know, I also run events for the American Kangaroo Math. Every couple of Sundays, I do a quiz where we get a few hundred kids to take part. So it's...

kinda so s Steve, you you see you see education on a more grander like scope and context than somebody that like me that like yeah, I've done plenty of like P D within the states, right?

Certainly in California and the West Coast. what is
Steve Martinez (17:01)
What is like a commonality that you see w in education across the globe? Yeah.
Steve Sherman (17:06)
There are trends.
Steve Sherman (17:08)
There are trends. you know, we're starting to see, and it's not just in South Africa, it's in the US as well, there are major declines in performance within schools with regards to mathematics. And people are trying to identify what the causes could be. And I have my own theory.
Steve Sherman (17:35)
I think kids today do not read. They are so connected to social media and the internet that because they don't read, their comprehension skills are lacking. And when it comes to mathematics, if you cannot understand what the question is asking you to do, then of course you cannot solve the problem because you're still busy working out what the question is.
Steve Sherman (18:01)
So I'm seeing that is something that is global. It's happening in many countries that I'm working with. don't only teach in the US, I teach in the UK and in Australia and in some European countries. And I've noticed that there is definitely a trend, a downward spiral for the kids that don't read. There's also been an uptick.
Steve Sherman (18:26)
in the number of kids with learning differences. I'm not going to say disabilities, but learning
Sophie Youngs, MEd (18:33)

Steve Sherman (18:34)
styles that are different. So, you know, we've got a lot of kids in South Africa, and I'm sure you have it in the US as well, who have a condition called ADSO. Have you ever heard of ADSO? No? Attention deficit. shiny object!
Steve Sherman (18:55)

my gosh.
Steve Sherman (18:56)
distracted with what's going on. Some people call it ADHD, but you know, at the end of the day, I'm finding that, and I suspect it all goes down to social media and amount of time spent on digital devices where concentration span is incredibly diminished. And when you've got kids that have got a diminished concentration span, that means you can impart less knowledge.
Steve Sherman (19:24)
They don't have the patience to learn and to acquire skills. And then they can't read and understand because the comprehension skills have declined. You're going to start to see this imploding within schools and then exploding within countries. And we started to see it all over. So, you know, what worries me is that AI is now stepping up and is taking over the job of some students.
Steve Sherman (19:54)
from writing their essays and doing their homework, they just simply ask AI to do it for them. And what it's actually doing is, is it's diminishing their capacity to think. So we are creating a species of child that is going to struggle to read, has very, very poor attention, and unfortunately has become complacent when it comes to thinking. And I have to tell you,
Steve Sherman (20:24)
Being creative and thinking is one of most exciting things to do. And any person that has had the opportunity to get a paintbrush or a pen or do something creative and sees the product of their work will be like, I had such fun. It was amazing. It would be sad if they start to lose that sensation of, I don't need to do that. ChatGPT can make the images for me. I think that that would be sad when people start to relinquish.

their joy for creativity and it's definitely becoming more prolific within the younger generation.
Sophie Youngs, MEd (21:03)
The dopamine seeking is more immediate. and it can be because of the shorts of the TikTok of the YouTube shorts and all of the the dopamine seeking is just like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. And there's like this set in some cases some technology addiction and they don't know how else to get it. there is research out there that collaboration is one of the ways to fight that.

So if you're in the

classroom and you're having a collaborative activity, students are less likely to reach for a device to hit get that dopamine boost when they are directly interacting with their peers. because that is giving them something to focus on, and it's also giving them the dopamine boost that they're that they're seeking as while that when they're talking and collaborating with their peers. so that's an interesting way to go about it too, because there's even teachers that are hesitant.

To allow students to collaborate in the classroom. They want to see that they

can do it on their own. And

I'm like, but a lot of learning happens when they're talking to one another, when they're assisting with each other, when they're teaching each other. There's so much more learning that goes on than just direct instruction and doing it on my own. so there are things I think that we can combat with a lot of that, but one of the things I don't think.

is going to be successful is just removing technology from classrooms.
Steve Sherman (22:36)
Well, that's that's a contentious issue and I'll tell you why you know at the end of the day when when you think about it I Have this and I've got to be careful how I say it because some people might get a little you know they might get their their tail feathers ruffled a little bit, but whoever controls the money controls the conversation and We have seen is that

EdTech providers are fighting for space and time in the classroom because for them it's a business.

But at the end of day, sometimes I think that the products that are being offered are not as essential as they are made out to be.

we could do a lot less with them and a lot more old school interaction and group work like you said. And then there's also a trend towards gamification of everything that you do in the classroom so we can mimic what the algorithms are doing to you when you are on social media. And yes, there are some great programs, I love Kahoot!, but it's not something that you do all the time because these kids then start thinking

We only played Coup last week. Why aren't we doing it this week? What's going on? And you can already see that addiction kicking in. So I think it's important that we also get kids to walk out of the classroom and use these things. We call them hands. And they get to play with things and do things. That's how you discover when you actually play with things. And I'm loving the robotics. I'm loving the fact that they can go and do coding and they can...
Steve Sherman (24:33)
put their hands in the codes and things together to make robots that actually compete in events. But then even they Lego and first have separated because Lego has introduced AI components. And now it's about you now need to buy the new Lego components to take part in the Lego competitions. And once again, people are putting profit before

the learning. And

we've got to be careful. And that's why I'm gentle about it, because some of them have got great value. But we must, as educators, we must try and find more time to engage the students and not just put the tech in their hands and say, you do the rest. Because I don't know if that's going to be of the greatest benefit to them.

Don't use tech for tech's sake. Yes, it's gotta be in yes, incredibly intentional and purposeful tech use. For example,

to get creative, you could use tools like Canva and Adobe to like get them to be like more creative and to create videos and flyers and ads and stuff that are applying other skills to do, but it's not something you're gonna do every day, type of thing. And just like a Kahoot.

the the I think people get confused as to what that could mean in a classroom. So like I I see teachers like, creativity, they immediately go think Adobe Canva. they're gonna create something or they're gonna create something beautiful out of a poster. But

Going back to what we kind of talked about at the top of the episode is the problem solving skills. Because like

and so that's something that I just wanted to underscore because that that's such an important part of how we think about creativity in a classroom, because it's not just about what they create, it's about what they solve.

You basically choose, do you want nine dice or five dice? Let's pick the five dice. I'm gonna roll them again. And of course it's going to pick five random images. And I'm gonna start once upon a time, there was a young woman who loved listening to music, but she was so distracted by the music, she did not notice there was a mouse crawling by.

And of course when the mouse came near her, she grabbed a book and threw it at the mouse and unfortunately it did hit the mouse but luckily for the mouse he managed to get away. Of course this young woman was not going to stay at home so she jumped into her car and she drove all the way to her office and she decided she was going to work from there instead of at home.

because there was no way she was going to spend time with a mouse anywhere near her. The end. So now you get kids, they have to learn how to create a story on the fly. And then when they are feeling a little bit more confident, we play interrupting cow. And interrupting cow is from that old knock knock joke, knock knock, and you say, who's there? And you go, interrupting

cow. go, moo, and you interrupt them. So what I do is they start the story.
Steve Sherman (29:05)
And I picked someone in the class that has to throw random words at me and I have to include them in the story as I'm going along. My goal is to reach the last image. Their goal is to distract me so I cannot get there. And what you do is you are actually teaching them proficiency in thinking on their feet, being creative. And let me tell you, there's no way is a chat GPT.

I have to make sure I say every child's name at least once and I make eye contact with them and I often ask them about things that are not related to the class so that I get to know them because sometimes when I'm explaining a concept, if I know that you are involved with skateboarding,

trying to get one idea across to 25 kids and hope that they all get it in the same way, which they don't. So you have to find unique little ways of presenting the same problem but in ways that they can each relate.

That is what is under the hat for you? What is what is top of mind? It could be something that's already been mentioned, maybe you want to underscore, but what is something we should be talking more about right now in education?

I think we've hinted at it and that is we want to go back to the idea that students go to school to learn and not to be taught. And right now it seems that we are just pushing content and then assessing

how much of that content they've managed to absorb, but we've forgotten the art of having these kids feeling inspired when they walk out. I want kids to say, I can't wait to go to school tomorrow because we are going to be doing this and I'm so looking forward to it as opposed to, I've got to get up and I've got to go to school because I have to.

I think that we need to move away from that mindset where it's about assessment and it's about pushing as much knowledge as we can into these kids so that they're ready for the world around them. If you teach these kids to love learning, they will be ready for the world. They will learn how to adapt. They will learn how to unlearn and relearn. Those are the kinds of skills we want them to have.
Steve Sherman (01:00:02)
But more importantly, I want them to be able to communicate, talk to someone, have a discussion, not put your hands down. You don't have to use your hands to solve a problem when someone disagrees with you. You know, you want them to learn to use their words, to use their minds. And I often see people when I do this thing every week called park run. I don't know if you guys have got it in the US.

But it started in the UK and it's now everywhere around the world. Every Saturday morning at eight o'clock, everyone meets at a specific spot and then they start the race. It's not really a race because you're not racing other people, you're racing yourself. And when you get to the finishing line, they scan your code and then they tell you how long you took to do it. So some people run, some people walk, guilty as charged. And at the end of the day,

You know that you've done five kilometers every week and then you start achieving badges and blah, blah, blah. And I see people running and smiling at the same time. And I'm wondering why on earth would you be smiling if you are running and there is this genuine pleasure in getting out there and actually running. I mean, people that, you know,

Dr. Seuss said it, where will these legs take you? They will take you somewhere special, you know. They love the fact that they have the power to just move and run and smile. I wish that students would feel the same about learning. And then when they learn to read, they go, just give me books. I can read, I can run. I want to go and discover new worlds. I want to learn new things. And when you teach them certain math skills, they go, wow.

do this I want to go and do more math so it's our job as educators to go in and remind the students of their potential and and as long as I can keep doing that I'll keep my hat firmly placed on my head and and that's what I'll be focusing on for the rest of my teaching career

I love that. I love that. I I'm a runner myself, right? And and I think that like just also keeping in mind that like it's not always easy, right? Like it's it's a part of the journey. but I think I think you're right, it's changing the mindset of like these things are good for us and it's a part of being human, it's the humanities, right? and so love that.
